Evolution

The Evolution of My Website

What I found most interesting when I viewed the history of user traffic to my website was that I received more overall visits during my search engine optimization (SEO) efforts than during the pay-per click (PPC) campaign. According to my Google Analytics report my website has received 73 visits overall (48 being unique visitors), with only 12 of those visits coming during my PPC advertising efforts. On the positive side though; of those 12 visits all of them were recorded as being unique visitors. Another statistic I found intriguing was that the average visit duration was 5 minutes and 51 seconds, meaning people are actually staying on my site reading my pages and blog posts. I am very pleased with results and user traffic my website has received.

Learning about Google Adwords and Google Analytics probably has been the most interesting and useful thing i have learned all semester. Both have really opened me up to the inner workings of online marketing. I do believe that having learned about both it will definitely come in handy in the future as everything keeps evolving towards the Internet.

My thoughts about interent marketing has changed since the prior to taking MKTG 470 (Dr. Theresa B. Clarke). Before I didn’t ever think much about marketing online besides sometimes that it was really annoying. Now I realize the reasons for why they do it and how it effects the decision of the user. I don’t know if I will do more of this in the future, but I know for sure I wouldn’t say “no” to it if an opportunity was presented. Now that the course is over I think I am going to maintain my website. I just know for sure that I am not going to blog anywhere near as much anymore.

SEO and Link Building

In this assignment I created a blog post illustrating some of the reasons for why I love JMU. In order to increase my ranking on the search engine results pages (SERPs) I put I love JMU as the title of the blog post, and throughout the blog post I consistently kept saying I love JMU. The only other thing that I did as far as on-page search-engine optimization (SEO) factors was that I put I love JMU as the alt tag for the picture. I built links by inserting multiple internal links throughout my website.

Some key data from my SEO Diagnostic Tests was that I used two different search engines for each of the tests. I used Google for test A and Bing for C. The person (Lauren Appleton) I saw first I didn’t even see in the top 20 SERPs when I did it the second time. Also Joseph Dickerson came up as the third person each time I did the tests, and I didn’t come up in the top 20 in either of the tests. My marketing score increased from 38 out of 100 (test B) to 56 out of 100(test D). My top of the funnel and analysis scores stayed the same while my middle of the funnel score increased from 8% in test B to 42% in test D.

There are some things I should do to further improve my websites orgainic rankings. One is to increase my internal links throughout my website even more. I need to also partner up with other classmates in order to get link exchanges.

JMU Emblem

I Love JMU

I love JMU and so does everyone else who has been to JMU at some point in their life. Even if you aren’t enrolled as a student in JMU, you still love JMU and everything it represents. The beauty of JMU is that it is nestled in a little valley town, which gives it a relaxing feeling unlike being in the middle of the city where craziness is always taking place. JMU is just big enough to where you can meet someone new everyday, and most likely a new friend will come out of it. The student body embraces JMU and if your among that student body you will be embraced wherever you go, even if it is after you have graduated. Once your a JMU Duke Dog your always a Duke Dog.

Those people who have graduated years ago or those who have just attended a JMU party will still say they love JMU and will be the first to tell you how great of a place it is. JMU has an amazing campus aura to it with beautiful scenery of the Blue Ridge mountains in the distance. There are always something to do within the Shenandoah Valley, which is why JMU students always have something fun planned. There’s snowboarding and skiing in the winter at Massanutten Ski Resort and then just good old outside chillen in the fall and spring. These are the few of many reasons of why I love JMU. Did I say I love JMU!

Google Webmaster Tools

Marketers Please Utilize Google Webmasters Tools

Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) provides numerous advantages for marketers to effectively and efficiently manage their websites. For one it helps marketers to generate more clicks for their pay per click advertisements. The GWT search queries feature is better than the Google Keywords Tool when marketers are wanting to know what keywords are most used as well as which keywords are having the greatest impact in driving user traffic to your website.

The feature within GWT known as search trending data allows marketers to see specifically what search terms are currently trending up and what ones are trending down. Also GWT provides marketers with a list of inbound links that Google identifies as being most appealing as well as what the top content is when receiving those links. Maybe the most important feature though that GWT offers is its ability to help marketers to make sure that their website is communicating the right message to Google about what exactly the website is about.

When I used GWT in analyzing my website it revealed an assortment of information in a way that was straight forward without being confusing. It showed me that only one of search queries (“travis harris”) has more than 10 impressions with an average position of 310. GWT also informed me that my JMU webpage has received the most impressions, while my Home webpage received the second most. I found out that I have 4 links to my website, and lastly GWT showed me that out of all my content keywords “marketing” had the greatest significance. The features of GWT I would like to learn more about would be the +1 Metrics and the Fetch a Googlebot features.

Search retargeting

Personalized Retargeting is TOO Invasive

Internet marketing has become increasingly more personalized to the user over the past couple of years, but has it become too personal? A new approach known as personalized retargeting or remarketing has become the new favored method used by online marketers to send advertisements to users via the Internet.

Personalized retargeting tailors ads so that users are viewing ads of products and services they are most likely to purchase. It knows this by tracking what you have viewed and clicked on within an online business site. For example the article “Retargeting Ads Follow Surfers to Other Sites” illustrates an example of this where a Montreal women looked at a pair of shoes on Zappos.com, but she wasn’t ready to buy them just yet so she left the site and continued browsing on the Internet. As she viewed other sites she noticed an ad for Zappos kept popping up that showed the same exact pair shoes she had just looked at on the site. This ad continued to pop up for days and weeks after she had originally visited the site. Even though this is a great marketing strategy marketers can use, I do not beleive it is in their best interest because of the way it makes consumers feel; a feeling of being watched over.

With retargeting becoming so precise with what ads to deliver to what uers many consumers are feeling like they are being watched as they browse the Internet. In reality they are being watched, and I do feel like it is an invasion of our consumer privacy. If a online business is able to target what you buy that easily then they can formulate a pretty good perception of what you look like and what social class you may be a part of. They don’t have too look at you to figure this out because they can just look at what you buy. I believe the government needs to step in and regulate this in some way.

Deb Van Horn

Ms. Van Horns’ Intriguing Insight Into Online Marketing

Today my MKTG 470 class was honored to have Ms. Deb Van Horn; the VP of Support Services at The Rockingham Group, give her own personal insight and knowledge on the ever expanding world of internet marketing.

In her presentation Ms. Van Horn illustrated the benefits her firm receives from being able to connect with consumers through social media, in particular Facebook. Facebook is an effective tool for reaching consumers since it enables two-way communication, which is something many marketers are having a difficult time adjusting too. In the past they just sent out ads and never had to deal with the instant feedback that social media now provides consumers with. Ms. Van Horn then showed how her company has been able to effectively target the right consumer segment by monitoring their Facebook activity. By doing so they were able to focus the majority of their online advertising on consumers who lived in Virginia and who were 45 years or older.

She then went on to describe how advertising online is much more inexpensive, not to mention more effective then advertising on the television or in the newspaper. When advertising online you don’t pay per impression you pay per click, whereas when advertising through the television or newspaper you do have to pay for each impression. In Harrisonburg the going rate for each impression of a television ad is ten dollars and for a newspaper it is between three and six dollars. If you were in a major city it would at least be triple the cost.

I learned many lessons from Ms Van Horn, the main thing was that she wanted to communicate to us that internet marketing is constantly evolving and if you are able to stay up to date with it you will always have a competitive advantage over the competition. She wanted to make sure that we know the importance of establishing a strong Linkedin page. Also she wanted us to Google ourselves to see what pops up and to see if that is what we want to be viewed as because that is what an employer would see. She was very insightful and would recommend her as a person to go to learn more. You can contact her through email at dlvanhorn@rockinghamgroup.com or through Twitter at http://twitter.com/debvanhorn.

Go To Savannah, GA For St. Patty’s Day

I recently got back from visiting a couple of friends in Savannah, Georgia for St. Patrick’s Day. Savannah was celebrating their 188th St. Patrick’s Day Festival. I have never previously been to Savannah, GA so I was definitely excited to go and see what all it had to offer. I have onlt heard good things about Savannah, and even better things about Savannah when you are there St. Patricks Day.

St. Patrick’s Day fell on a Saturday this year, so the city of Savannah was expecting around one million people (last year they had around 600,000 come out on Friday) to gather. This could potentially not only make it the largest St. Patrick’s Day festival in the country, but in the world. The historic Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day parade was also expecting to see record numbers come out. It blew my mind when my bud first told me this because I didn’t really believe him. I thought Boston for sure would have the bigger St. Patrick’s Day gathering since Boston is historically known for having a large Irish population.

The city shuts down all of the roads in Savannah in order to make space for the massive amounts of people to congregate. On this day the city is literally painted green, the fountains even were flowing with green water. Everyone was covered in all shades of green from head to toe; drinking their favorite St. Patrick’s Day beverage. You see people of all ages participating, celebrating, and enjoying a great time. This was by far the best time I have had on St. Patrick’s Day, and I would definitely recommend it for sure!

Implications

Whats With Google’s New Private Policy

On March 1, 2012 Google will update their private policy in order “to enable the combination of user data from one Google service with user data from other Google services.”

The main point as to why Google is issuing this new private policy is because it allows for Google to gain user permission to share valuable user-internet data across all Google products. With the new policy Google is positioning itself as a one-stop shop for targeted advertising. This will also allow Google to better tailor their paid seacrh ads, display ads, and orgainic listenings. Google can now create more unique, relevant search engine pages for each specific user.

Google’s new private policy creates more opportunites in brand advertising, but more importantly it better positions Google against competing firms like Facebook when it comes to cnnected user demographic and interest data.

Engaging

Am I Really Engaging in Twitter for the First Time! Really?

I have never engaged in Twitter before this assignment for my MKTG 470. I have heard alot about what Twitter has to offer, built have never experienced it first hand. I am interested to see what Twitter is all about! Also linking my website to Twitter can increase the number of view it has.

Over the last hour I have searched through most of the tweets of the people I am following. I had also read a blog post on the topic “Twitter Tips for Beginners,” which helped me understand a couple aspects of Twitter more clearly. To me the most valuable thing Twitter provides its users is the ability to effectively and efficiently network with friends, students, faculty, employers and employees.

One reason for why it is important to engage in Twitter now is because as a college student it is not only “hip”, but it also allows me to communicate to all of my friends at once. Not only that but it also allows me to find out quickly about recent events in the news. Through the use of Twitter you can follow your favorite athletes and celebrities, and see what they are thinking or doing at that very moment.

As for when I when I enter the workforce It will be important for me to engage in Twitter because it will allow me to network quickly on a daily basis with potential clients and other employees. Also it will allow me to show or communicate one message to all my followers, which will help in decreasing the time it takes to convey that message. I just have to make sure not to tweet anything that will have a negative impact on the way others view me.

My Awesome New Website Theme! Oh Yea!

For Dr. Clarke’s course we had to install a new theme for our website. The new theme I installed is zeeSynergie, and the author of this theme is ThemeZee. The reason for why I chose this theme is because it has an elegant, sleek design that works great with websites being used for blogging as well as small business, and blogging is what we will be doing a lot of as we continue to develop our website in MKTG 470.

This theme comes with an option panel where i can upload a logo for my website. Also it has a banner for ad widgets, a custom footer, a drop down navigation, and integrated social media buttons. All of these features will come in handy when I learn more about WordPress throughout this course,

I only noticed a couple of changes to the functionality and appearance of my website when I changed to my new theme. It does not show my original favicon, Dr. Clarke’s tweets, and the links to “Pages” and “More” down at the bottom of my website.

Overall this was a fairly easy transition between each theme.
